With almost 28 years of experience as a choreographer training dedicated disciples to become fine dancers, Nishtala Sudhamala is a consummate teacher. Initiated into the dance form by late Sri Vempati Kodanda Rama Sastry, she took her baby steps in Kuchipudi dance under the tutelage of her elder sister, Dr. Uma Vyjayanthimala Kallakuri and has learnt Theory, Abhinaya and Stage-craft from late Sri A.U.R Somayajulu. She holds diplomas in Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam, certificates of proficiency in Sanskrit and Hindi and an M.A in Telugu Literature. She has acted as a judge for the All India level classical dance competitions, and as an examiner for the practical examination of Bharatanatyam certificate and diploma courses conducted by Potti Sriramulu Telugu University. She also has experience as an announcer for a short duration of 10 months in A I R, Warangal. She has published many articles on Natyayoga in reputed journals such as Vedamlo Natyam in ‘Krishna Patrika’ and Natya Vidya Guruparampara in ‘Rakshana’. She also presented a paper ‘Girika Sangeetanatyalu’ on Girika, a danseuse from an acclaimed Telugu novel Veyipadagalu, a subject which is very close to her heart.
Sudhamala has many an honor under her belt including the prestigious Siddhendrayogi Puraskaram for her contribution to the Kuchipudi dance form. A gifted dancer excelling in choreography and a skilful manager, Sudhamala has choreographed her first ballet, Girija Kalyanam, at the age of 13. Ever since, she has written, choreographed and presented many spectacular ballets with sources ranging from Dikshitar Kritis to folk songs, from historical fiction to mythology. Some of them are Girija Kalyanam, Padma Raagam, Ramappa, Guru Tatvam, Kumarasambhavam, Nrityanjali and Ramayan. An adept researcher possessing keen analytical skills, Sudhamala has assisted her elder sister, Dr. Uma Kallakuri in her research for many years and helped her publish her doctoral thesis in a book form on Natyayoga in 2009.
Fresh from the success of her latest dance ballet ‘Pranatosmi Goutami’ on the history and plight of the river Godavari, which she has written, choreographed and presented as part of the Godavari Arthi Utsav, Nishtala Sudhamala is currently managing NRITYAMALA, her dance school established in 1984 by her elder sister and also works as a dance teacher at Sri Satya Sai Vidya Vihar High School. In spite of her overwhelming schedule, she can also been seen pouring over books like the good research scholar that she is, diligently working over her research project on Girika, the danseuse who attained moksha in ‘Veyipadagalu’ a novel written by Gnanapeetha awardee Kavisamrat Sri Viswanatha Satyanarayana.
